Forgiveness meets Fast with the Callaway XR 16 Driver

By Jon Levy

Callaway has been working feverishly to crack the code of creating a truly forgiving driver without sacrificing clubhead speed, so golfers can enjoy the benefits of improved accuracy AND distance.

Who better to enlist for support of this than the leading engineers of Boeing?

That’s right, the massive aviation company teamed up with Callaway to create the Callaway XR 16 driver, which increases clubhead speed in a forgiveness-based design by literally making air “stick” more onto the club for a reduction in distance-impeding drag others of this nature suffer from.

Available for pre-order on Jan. 15 and retail Jan. 29, we were fortunate to receive an exclusive sneak peak of the XR 16 from the man leading the team that created it, Dr. Alan Hocknell.

Hear what “Doc Hock” had to say in our short video below, and get a first look at in-hand images of this incredibly advanced golf club and accompanying line of woods:

Callaway boils down the new XR 16 to a bottom line of “forgiveness meets fast,” meaning the high-speed head and lower-drag crown combined with a forgiving larger shape adds some serious clubhead speed to a big footprint to hit from.

It features Callaway’s R•MOTO face, which is lighter than previous models and and up to 19 percent thinner for more speed across the entire face. This is combined with their re-engineered Speed Step, which, as a result of working with the aerodynamics experts at Boeing, enables the XR 16 to reach a completely new threshold of speed they weren’t previously able to. By also pinpointing the precise size and placement of the Speed Step on the crown of the club, this is what ultimately enabled Callaway to complete the equation of setting a new standard in aerodynamics for more distance AND forgiveness, or forgiveness meets fast.

For the better player, Callaway has also released the XR 16 Pro driver and woods line, which creates a more penetrating trajectory and lower spin because of a lower CG and deeper-face 450cc clubhead, as opposed to the 460cc clubhead in the regular XR series.

As always, be sure to talk to your local GolfTEC Coach to get custom fit for the new Callaway XR 16 driver and woods, as Callaway offers a wide range of no-upcharge shaft options to fit your swing speed!
