Mizuno releases three new irons in the new MP-20 line intended to be flawlessly combined

By Sabrina Naccarato

If you’ve been around golf long enough, you should know by now that ‘nothing feels like Mizuno.’ And when it comes to their irons, it’s pretty hard to dispute that statement.

With the launch of the new MP-20 iron line, feel was of utmost priority. But wouldn’t you think that’s the case with all of their irons? Well, yes of course, but they did a little something different this time. These new irons feature a copper underlay that provides the purest feel for a players club. This isn’t the first time Mizuno has opted for copper. Their legendary TN87 irons featured the metal and had a feeling that couldn’t be replicated, until now.

Feel is a massive part of the story with the MP-20 irons, but there’s another feature that needs to be noted. The MP irons typically speak to better players, but that idea has altered with the addition of the new MMC and HMB irons. New technology and the intended capability to mix and match these irons with the classic muscle backs opens up the MP-20 irons to a whole new group of golfers who now get to experience how ‘nothing feels like Mizuno.’

Features & Benefits: Mizuno MP-20 irons

Layers of Feel

“Most modern muscle backs and limited ‘tour edition’ irons can be traced back to the great Mizuno blades. Though what makes a Mizuno iron truly exceptional is everything you can’t see. If you could peel back the chrome plating, you would find a sandwich of nickel and soft copper before the Grain Flow Forged HD chassis. Under a microscope, you can see a perfect flow of grain within the steel from the hosel to toe, compacted tighter in the hitting area. Designers can mimic our lines, but not what’s inside.”

MP-20 MB

Mizuno MP 20- MB back

The ultimate Mizuno muscle back – heavily influenced by the most revered blades of Mizuno’s past. Grain Flow Forged HD from a single billet of 1025E Pure Select Mild Carbon Steel – then layered with soft Copper plating beneath a protective Nickel Chrome for legendary feel and feedback.

Layers of Feel: Grain Flow Forged HD in Hiroshima Japan, from 1025E Pure Select mild carbon steel, then plated in soft copper and Nickel Chrome – the original layering from Mizuno’s great TN87 blade.

‘Tour Ready’ Profile: Honed by studying elements of Mizuno’s most played/retained tour iron models – by both contracted and non-contracted tour players. Usage amongst ‘free-agents’ on tour provided a new perspective.

Vertically Stable: A discreetly tapered top blade and cambered sole allow a fuller vertical spread of weight to forgive strikes high or low from the face – without distorting the traditional muscle back appearance.

Refined Topline: Mizuno’s thinnest topline of recent generations – a response to feedback from our tour players. The MP-20 #3 iron is reduced by 0.05m and pitching wedge by 0.15mm (compared to MP-18).

Mixed satin/mirror finish: Combination of chrome finishing to eliminate areas of high glare in the playing position.

MP-20 MMC

Mizuno MP 20- MCC back

The 2nd generation of Mizuno’s multi-material concept – with a thinner topline and refined scoring irons. Based on the chassis, set flow and proportions of the MP-20 muscle back – engineered to be more playable through the use of Titanium muscle plate and Tungsten sole weight. Grain Flow Forged HD from a single billet of 1025E Pure Select Mild Carbon Steel – layered within soft Copper plating and protective Nickel Chrome for legendary feel and feedback.

Layers of Feel: Grain Flow Forged HD in Hiroshima Japan, from 1025E Pure Select mild carbon steel, then plated in soft copper and Nickel Chrome – the original layering from Mizuno’s great TN87 blade.

Stability in a Tour preferred profile: Titanium muscle spreads weight for forgiveness from off-center strikes while maintaining center portion thickness for muscle back type feel/feedback.

Multi-material construction: Grain Flow 1025E mild carbon steel chassis and Ti muscle pad throughout, with 12g Tungsten toe weight (4-7 iron) for ease of launch in a compact playing profile.

Improved set flow to wedges: Use of a 2nd Titanium muscle pad specific to the short irons, allows a narrower sole from 8 iron to pitching wedge

Dramatically thinner topline: As a response to requests from the tour. The MP-20 MMC #4 iron is reduced by 0.3mm and pitching wedge by 0.4mm (compared to MP-18 MMC). Less than 1mm thicker at address than the MP-20 muscle back.

Mixed satin/mirror finish: Combination of chrome finishing to eliminate areas of high glare in the playing position.
