Left handed people make up about 10% of the population worldwide. As a member of the exclusive left-handed community, I know firsthand some of the struggles we go through. Generally speaking, being a lefty won’t make your life THAT much harder. Sure, you’ll always have a little trouble with scissors and can openers, writing with a pen will be a never ending battle against smudges, and you’ll want to steer clear of most power tools.

That said, we’re part of a fairly prestigious group. Jimi Hendrix was a lefty. Kurt Cobain was a lefty. Paul McCartney was a lefty. Heck, 5 of the last 7 Presidents of the United States were left handed; that’s a lot of star power for the southpaws. However, if you grew up playing this great game of golf, you are well aware of the hardships faced by those whose swing from the “right” side of the golf ball.

In 1963, Bob Charles won the Houston Classic, the first PGA Tour event won by a left handed player. Later that year, he would go on to win The Open Championship at Royal Lytham and St Annes to become the first lefty major champion. In 1963, if you were interested in purchasing a set of left handed golf clubs, your options would be pretty limited. In fact, I’ve spoken to dozens of my students who are naturally left handed who learned to play the game right handed due to the lack of equipment options. Fortunately for us lefties, it’s a new millennium, and the equipment options available are as plentiful as ever.

Nearly every major manufacturer offers at least some of their equipment in left handed versions.  If you’re in the market for some new gear, here’s a brief summary of what is available from some major equipment brands:

Adams: All Products (limited loft options)

Callaway: All Products (limited loft options)

Cobra: All Products (limited loft options) except Bio Cell+ fairway

Mizuno: MP-54, JPX-825, JPX FLI HI, JPX and MP-T4 wedges

Nike: Entire VRS Covert 2.0 line

PING: Everything

TaylorMade: All Products (limited loft options) except Tour Preferred MB

Titleist: All Products (limited loft options)

Nearly every GolfTEC location will have fitting carts with left handed heads to ensure that your new clubs are dialed in to your perfect specifications.  If you are planning on going through our TECfit club fitting, make sure you get in touch with your fitter prior to your appointment to make sure they have the equipment you are interested in. If we don’t have something in our fitting cart, we can always get it from one of the manufacturer’s representatives if we have a little lead time. You might even get fit by a lefty (there are over a dozen GolfTEC Coaches that play left handed nation-wide)!

If you’re left handed, there has never been a better time to find the right equipment for your game. And if you’re interested in running for President, the odds are in your favor…just stay away from those power tools.

  1. i appreciate your article on left handed equipment and how far the industry has come. Those of us left handlers who play today still remember finding out some limitations on types of equipment available. I recently purchased a full new set of irons, driver, and fairway woods and had a pretty good selection of equipment available. Here in Michigan one such retailer is Carl’s Golfland who has recognized the importance of having a complete website and store for lefties to be able to chose equipment from. Thank you Carl’s take it from a lefty I appreciate your efforts.
